Reggaeton is built on the dembow — a syncopated kick-snare-kick pattern that gives the genre its signature bounce. Originating in Puerto Rico in the 1990s, it has evolved from raw underground production to a global pop phenomenon. BeatsMaker lets you program the classic dembow pattern and build on it with bass, melody and the Pump effect that gives modern reggaeton its pulsing, club-ready energy.

🔥

The dembow pattern

The dembow is a three-hit pattern: kick on beat 1, snare on the "and" of beat 2, kick again on beat 3. In a 16-step grid: steps 1, 6, 9. Everything else in reggaeton builds on this foundation.

🎹

Rolling bass & chord stabs

Reggaeton bass is active and melodic. Use the Bass track to program a rolling 16th-note pattern that follows the dembow. Add chord stabs on the Chord track for the pop-reggaeton sound.

🎚️

Sidechain pump

The Pump effect sidechains the master output to the kick, creating the ducking, breathing effect you hear in all modern reggaeton. Set Pump to 50–80 for that club-ready dynamic pulse.

Style library

Load the Reggaeton style preset to get an instant dembow groove, then customize: swap sounds, change the melody, adjust the BPM between 92 and 98, and make it your own.

Pro tip: the snare on the "and" of beat 2 (step 6 in a 16-step pattern) is everything. If that hit doesn't bounce, the dembow doesn't work. Get that placement locked in first, then build everything around it.
FAQ

Reggaeton Beats questions

Common questions about making reggaeton beats online.

What is the dembow rhythm? +
The dembow is the foundational rhythmic pattern of reggaeton: a kick on beat 1, a snare (or rimshot) on the upbeat of beat 2, and another kick on beat 3. This creates a syncopated, bouncing feel that is impossible not to move to.
What BPM is reggaeton? +
Reggaeton typically runs at 92–100 BPM. The relatively slow tempo combined with the syncopated dembow pattern creates a groove that feels both relaxed and energetic at the same time.
What is the difference between reggaeton and dembow? +
Dembow is the rhythmic pattern; reggaeton is the genre built on that pattern. Dembow originally referred to a specific Jamaican dancehall rhythm that was adapted in Puerto Rico into what became reggaeton production.
How do I make my reggaeton beat sound modern? +
Modern reggaeton (2015–present) layers the classic dembow with trap elements: 808 bass, 808 hi-hats, and melodic hooks. In BeatsMaker, program the dembow in the kick and snare tracks, then add a trap-style hi-hat roll and a melodic bass over it.
